Sometimes IT and/or business get it wrong. Sometimes system tables are configured incorrectly and affects the value of transactions flowing through the system.
I have experience in restitution work and having to correct the system and provide monetary refunds to impacted policyholders.
I follow the agreed practice of communicating back to the affected policyholders the systemic issue that was uncovered, working out the value of the refund with the actuaries and organising the payments back through the system.
Tools I use for restitution work
I use MS Access and SQL to satisfy these types of requests.
In some cases, I develop routines to create unique keys and foreign keys to glean data from different sources together as part of the same reporting investigation.
